SUMMARY: Reports to Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer. Plans, organizes, and manages inpatient Pharmacy operations for Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital, Bradley Hospital, St. Anne's Hospital, Morton Hospital, and Gateway Healthcare. RESPONSIBILITIES: Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the principles of the Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct. Strategic Planning & Leadership
- Develops and recommends short- and long-term goals for inpatient pharmacy services aligned with Brown University Health's mission, values, and key business objectives; advocates for resources required to achieve operating results.
- Participates in development, implementation, and monitoring of the inpatient operating budget for each affiliate; establishes operating priorities to ensure fiscal responsibility and alignment with system-wide strategy.
- Participates in professional activities and maintains professional affiliations to remain current with industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging legislation.
Operations & People Leadership
- Directs the effective utilization of human, financial, and material resources across inpatient areas in collaboration with affiliate Managers; monitors productivity data and drives corrective action to address variances.
- Through affiliate Managers, ensures effective recruitment, development, and evaluation of inpatient pharmacy staff; monitors expenditures and ensures maintenance of equipment and physical inventory.
- Develops, implements, and administers policies and procedures necessary to maintain high standards of care and effective service delivery across all inpatient pharmacy areas.
Clinical Services, Quality & Safety
- Directs implementation and integration of inpatient clinical pharmacy services.
- Leads formulary management initiatives to maximize therapeutic outcomes, minimize drug-related risk, and ensure cost-effective pharmacotherapy across the health system.
- Directs planning and implementation of patient-focused inpatient service delivery models, including optimization of the inpatient electronic health record.
- Ensures inpatient care activities meet established clinical standards, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and age-specific patient population needs.
Sterile & Non-Sterile Compounding
- Directs sterile and non-sterile compounding services in collaboration with pharmacy department leadership.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable compounding regulations, including USP Chapters 795, 797, and 800, NIOSH hazardous drug handling guidelines, and TJC Medication Management standards.
Education & Academic Programs
- Develops university-affiliated programs for undergraduate pharmacy students; collaborates with residency coordinators on recruitment, curriculum, and graduate pharmacist training; may serve as preceptor for Brown University Health pharmacy residency programs.
- Directs pharmacy technician training programs; precepts pharmacy students and residents.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work requires extended periods of standing, walking, and computer use in a clinical and office environment May require travel between affiliate hospital sites and off-site locations Requires visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer and related technology systems Exposure to clinical environments, including areas where hazardous drugs are handled; adherence to all applicable personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols is required. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Functions independently within a broad scope of departmental policies and procedures in the management and strategic direction of inpatient pharmacy services. Refers novel, complex, or organizationally sensitive issues to the Vice President and Chief Pharmacy Officer as appropriate. BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy. Master's degree (e.g., MBA, MS, MPH) and/or ASHP accredited PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency preferred.
Prior to start date, possesses current unrestricted licensure as a licensed pharmacist or a licensed 90-day temporary pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island. Within 90 days of start date, must possess and maintain current unrestricted licensure as a licensed pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island.
Advanced skills with Microsoft 365 applications, which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access, and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis, and maintain databases. Experience with Microsoft Power Business Intelligence (BI) preferred. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively more responsible management experience in inpatient hospital pharmacy - Required.
Experience in a multi-hospital, academic medical center environment - Preferred.
Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex, multi-site pharmacy operations across diverse affiliate organizations.
Effective leadership, organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to collaborate across disciplines and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises up to 6 direct reports. Supervises up to 150-200 indirect reports. Has the authority to direct and support employees' daily work activities. Holds direct responsibility for employment actions, including hiring, termination, corrective action, and performance reviews. Provides leadership, coaching, and professional development to direct reports to support a high-performing team. Pay Range: $147,784.00-$243,859.20
