Primary Purpose of Department
The University Transfer Center provides advising support, transition services, and advocacy to promote transfer and adult student success. Through collaboration with campus and external partners, the Center connects students to the resources, pathways, and support systems that facilitate a smooth transition into the university and support their progression to graduation.
The Transfer Center serves as a resource to transfer and adult students, with a particular emphasis on prospective and newly enrolled students, as well as a resource to faculty and staff.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Transfer and Adult Student Advisor supports prospective and enrolled students with prior college credit, including transfer and adult learners, by providing comprehensive academic advising and transition support. This position helps students understand how their credits apply, explore academic options, and identify coursework that supports a seamless transition into their intended major and timely progression to graduation. The advisor also plays a key role in coordinating initiatives that strengthen transfer and adult student pathways across campus and with external partners.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Advising and Student Support (60%)

  • Provide academic advising to prospective and enrolled transfer and adult students through in-person, virtual, and off-site modalities.
  • Assist students in understanding how prior credit applies to degree requirements, including general education, major prerequisites, and course sequencing.
  • Guide students in exploring academic options and selecting courses prior to enrollment to support a seamless transition into upper-division coursework within their intended major.
  • Support students in navigating academic policies and processes, including change of major requirements and institutional expectations after transfer.
  • Provide supplemental advising support to enrolled students with transfer credit, including guidance on the academic petition process for credit reevaluation.
  • Support transition for newly enrolled students by connecting them to appropriate campus resources and services.
  • Provide advising that is responsive to the needs of adult learners, including students balancing work, family responsibilities, and returning to college after time away.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of advising interactions in accordance with university policies and best practices.



Outreach, Programming, and Engagement (15%)

  • Coordinate and deliver programming, workshops, and presentations that support transfer and adult student transition and success.
  • Participate in outreach efforts, including community college visits, campus events, and virtual engagement opportunities.
  • Assist in the development of materials and resources that support student understanding of transfer pathways and academic planning.
  • Contribute to initiatives that support community building and persistence among transfer and adult students.


Communication and Operational Support (10%)

  • Monitor and respond to inquiries received through the University Transfer Center email and other communication channels.
  • Provide timely, accurate, and student-centered information to prospective and enrolled students.
  • Assist with the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of advising guides, transfer resources, and website content.
  • Support data collection and reporting efforts related to advising and student engagement.


Projects, Collaboration, and Professional Development (15%)

  • Lead or co-lead departmental and university initiatives related to transfer, adult learner success, and pathway development.
  • Serve as a liaison to designated campus partners and/or external institutions (e.g., community colleges) to support transfer pathways and reduce credit loss.
  • Coordinate components of transfer and/or adult student initiatives that require collaboration across units, including pathway development, transition programming, and joint outreach efforts.
  • Serve on committees or working groups and contribute to the development and implementation of strategies that support student success.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to the professional learning of the advising team through sharing of best practices, resources, or training.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field.
  • At least two years of experience in academic advising.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Academic Advising experience, preferably with North Carolina community college students or university transfer students.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex situations and identify student-centered solutions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success, including initiative in providing responsive, individualized support.
  • Excellent written communication and organizational skills, including strong attention to detail and effective documentation practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with systems such as Banner, Slate, Zoom, and Google Workspace.
