Sr. Cell Failure Modeling Engineer

Tesla Motors, Inc.
112000 - 192000 USD
paid holidays, flex time, 401(k)
United States, California, Palo Alto
Sep 15, 2026
What to Expect

Tesla is looking for an electrochemistry expert who will consolidate the various aspects of battery aging, and the large amount of lab and fleet aging data, into a physics-based model of cell aging. This role will focus on modeling knees of different kinds. The engineer will perform in-depth analysis of existing aging data and suggest additional tests necessary for Tesla to correctly model failure modes. The engineer will learn and extensively use the lifetime team's current aging model, while suggesting improvements and physics-based extensions in our continuous effort to improve our understanding of cell degradation.

What You'll Do
  • Develop a unified view of the many degradation mechanisms at work in the cells used by Tesla both in-house and vendor
  • Support and develop our current lifetime model, calibrate models for new cells, and forecast lifetime predictions
  • Suggest new ways of consuming and analyzing the existing data, and coming up with novel tests and measurements to quantify failure modes
  • Extend Tesla's existing lifetime model to include more physics-based processes
  • Develop a model for the various changes that can occur during the cells' lifetime

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of industry experience modeling energy products with a physics and chemistry background
  • Strong background in numerical methods, and a good physics and chemical understanding of energy products
  • Cell modeling experience (electrochemical, thermal, lifetime)
