Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a nationally recognized leader in chemical education and research, with a mission to advance scientific discovery, educate future scientists, and serve the broader scientific community. As one of the largest and most research-intensive departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department supports a vibrant academic community that includes faculty, staff, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and undergraduate majors.

The Department delivers a comprehensive educational program that provides instruction to thousands of students annually through classroom and laboratory courses while fostering excellence in undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral training. Faculty members are deeply engaged in both teaching and mentoring and lead internationally recognized research programs spanning the chemical sciences.

Research within the Department is supported by a broad portfolio of federal and private funding sources and encompasses fundamental and applied investigations that address important scientific and societal challenges. As part of the University's emerging pharmacoengineering initiative, the Department of Chemistry plays a central role in advancing analytical, molecular, and measurement sciences that support pharmaceutical innovation, biotechnology, and translational medicine through collaborations with the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, the Lampe Department of Biomedical Engineering, and other campus partners.
Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in analytical chemistry with a focus on bioanalytical and pharmaceutical measurement science. This position is part of a university-wide pharmacoengineering initiative designed to advance research, education, and innovation in pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, and therapeutic development.

The successful candidate will develop an internationally recognized research program focused on analytical technologies relevant to pharmaceutical and biologic systems. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, biosensors, lab-on-a-chip and microfluidic systems, advanced separation science, analytical characterization of biologics, single-cell analysis, diagnostics, therapeutic monitoring, and other innovative measurement approaches that advance drug discovery, pharmaceutical manufacturing, precision medicine, and translational science.

Faculty responsibilities include conducting innovative research, securing external funding, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in chemistry, contributing to interdisciplinary training initiatives in pharmacoengineering, and participating in departmental, university, and professional service.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
* Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry or closely related field.

* Demonstrated research experience in analytical, bioanalytical, or measurement sciences relevant to biological, pharmaceutical, or therapeutic systems.

* Significant research experience beyond the doctoral degree, typically including postdoctoral training.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Record of scholarly achievement and evidence of the potential to establish a highly innovative and externally funded research program.

* Research interests aligned with pharmacoengineering, including for example bioanalytical chemistry, biosensing, microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip technologies, advanced separations, diagnostics, single-cell analysis, therapeutic monitoring, or characterization of complex biologic or pharmaceutical systems.

* Demonstrated potential to collaborate across disciplines including chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical engineering, medicine, and biotechnology.

* Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.

* Interest in translational research, technology development, entrepreneurship, or industry partnerships.
