Commissioning Intern - Summer 2027
Location: Cincinnati, OH
Job Summary
Fishbeck is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Commissioning Intern to join our Mechanical Engineering team in our Cincinnati, OH office for Summer 2027. This internship provides hands-on experience in the commissioning process for HVAC, plumbing, and building mechanical systems on a variety of new construction and renovation projects.
Working alongside experienced engineers and commissioning professionals, you will gain exposure to building systems, construction site inspections, functional performance testing, and project documentation. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in HVAC systems, building performance, and the engineering and construction industry to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world setting.
What You'll Do
Assist the commissioning team with HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical system commissioning activities.
Participate in construction site visits, inspections, and observations alongside experienced team members.
Support functional performance testing to verify that building systems are operating as designed.
Assist with preparing commissioning reports, testing documentation, and project checklists.
Review mechanical drawings, specifications, and equipment documentation to gain an understanding of building systems.
Learn about building automation systems, HVAC controls, and mechanical equipment operation.
Attend project meetings and collaborate with engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
Gain hands-on experience with the commissioning process from construction through project completion.
What We're Looking For
Currently pursuing an associate's or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, Building Systems Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
Interest in HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, building operations, and energy efficiency.
Basic understanding of mechanical systems, HVAC principles, or building construction through coursework or hands-on experience.
Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Willingness to learn, ask questions, and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to work in both office and construction site environments.
Familiarity with mechanical drawings, building automation systems, or HVAC equipment is a plus but not required.
Previous internship, technical training, or hands-on mechanical experience is a plus but not required.
Minimum Physical Requirements
Ability to work in both office and field environments, including walking active construction sites, standing for extended periods, and using standard office equipment. Occasional lifting and carrying may be required. Ability to travel to project sites with team members as needed. Visual acuity to assist with inspections, testing, and documentation.
