WHAT YOU WILL DO
The Rental Field Service Mentor position is responsible for diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining Caterpillar heavy construction and earthmoving rental equipment in the field. Equipment may include excavators, track-type tractors, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, compact track loaders, skid steer loaders, telehandlers, and other Caterpillar equipment within the Cat Rental Store Fleet.
This is a skilled field technician position that will provide technical oversight, guidance, and hands-on instruction to newer and developing technicians while maintaining an individual field service workload. The Rental Field Service Mentor will assist technicians with advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair procedures, and field service practices while promoting safe, efficient, and high-quality repairs. This individual will report to the Rental Store Manager or Service Manager and serve customers of the Rental Store.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
* Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair Caterpillar rental equipment at customer and company locations.
* Provide technical guidance, hands-on instruction, and mentoring to newer and developing field service technicians.
* Evaluate and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems.
* Research and interpret Caterpillar service information, technical publications, schematics, and diagnostic information to determine appropriate repair procedures.
* Assist developing technicians with troubleshooting and diagnostic processes and recommend alternative techniques and approaches to service and repair.
* Review, advise on, and provide feedback regarding trainee progress, diagnostic processes, and work performed.
* Evaluate completed repairs to ensure work meets Thompson Machinery and Caterpillar quality and safety standards.
* Respond to customer service needs in a professional, safe, and timely manner.
* Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs, and equipment preparation as required.
* Assist with complex or difficult field repairs and provide additional technical support when needed.
* Maintain accurate service reports, work orders, repair documentation, and other required paperwork.
* Communicate effectively with customers, technicians, managers, service personnel, and other company representatives.
* Works independently with minimal supervision while effectively managing assigned field service workload.
* Uses personal and company tools, diagnostic equipment, and technical resources effectively.
* Maintains awareness of hazards associated with field service work and follows all applicable safety policies and procedures.
* Must be able to lift 25-30 pounds.
* Requires frequent hand use for typing, operating the phone, handling materials, and other job-related tasks.
* Must maintain a valid driver's license and comply with Thompson Machinery's corporate driving policy.
* Able to travel throughout the assigned territory and work at customer locations as needed.
* Able to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, nights, weekends, and on-call hours as required.
* Other duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
* High school diploma or equivalent required; technical education, diesel technology, or equipment service training through an accredited technical school, equipment dealership, or manufacturer training program preferred.
* Seven or more years of hands-on experience diagnosing, repairing, and servicing heavy construction and earthmoving equipment preferred.
* Caterpillar equipment experience strongly preferred.
* Strong experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical/electronic systems, powertrain, and equipment diagnostics.
* Previous experience mentoring, training, coaching, or providing technical guidance to developing technicians preferred.
* Candidates with strong advanced diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and diagnostic experience who demonstrate the ability to mentor and develop technicians will be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, TECHNICAL SKILL, & ABILITIES
* Demonstrated proficiency in advanced machine troubleshooting and diagnostics.
* Strong working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems.
* Ability to interpret Caterpillar service information, schematics, diagnostic information, and technical publications.
* Ability to utilize Caterpillar diagnostic tools, software, and technical resources.
* Demonstrated knowledge of failure analysis and preventative maintenance practices.
* Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop technicians through hands-on instruction and technical guidance.
* Ability to evaluate technician work and provide constructive feedback and recommendations.
* Ability to prioritize multiple service calls, repairs, and mentoring responsibilities while maintaining a high level of customer service.
* Must demonstrate professionalism, integrity, adaptability, and a strong customer service focus.
* Demonstrates a sense of urgency, self-initiative, and the personal drive to be successful.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
