I. JOB OVERVIEW






Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University's Columbian College of Arts and Sciences ( CCAS) is the largest undergraduate school on campus and home to the engaged liberal arts. The CCAS Undergraduate Academic Advising Office provides integral support to students navigating their unique academic journeys.

The Senior Academic Advisor position will serve as an invaluable supporter for CCAS students - they are aware of resources and opportunities both within the University and the community at large. In addition, Senior Academic Advisors engage in meaningful conversations with students to promote critical thinking about how the student's interests can be realized in the creation of a personal academic plan. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Duties:

  • Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Senior Advisor will assist students with navigating transitions, exploring options, overcoming challenges, and developing academic plans by individual appointments and group advising sessions
  • Possessing a mastery of knowledge and understanding of GW rules, regulations, policies, and procedures as well as the academic curriculum and its rigor
  • Tracking and managing student records through both paper and electronically
  • Attending staff meetings and professional development opportunities in order to continue the flow of ideas and learning to strengthen the team
  • Developing, maintaining, and enhancing internal projects that further student success and advisor accessibility
  • Assisting the Director with review/assessment of first-year experience course for newly admitted CCAS first-year students
  • Participating in large-scale University events such as new student orientation, graduation, etc.
  • Planning and executing workshops, co-curricular networking, and personal development programming for first-year experience students
  • Collaborate regularly with the Office of Student Success, Career Services Center, Center for Student Engagement, Academic Commons, Registrar's Office, and other campus partners in planning and implementing the first-year experience advising activities


Perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • A demonstrated commitment to a career in higher education.
  • 2 years' experience in advising undergraduate students.


Hiring Range $47,073.26 - $64,771.35
