About the Job

Application Deadline: December 18, 2026
Fellowship Start Date: September 2027
Positions Available: 1 full-time Postdoctoral Fellow

Position Overview:
The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School invites applications for 1 full-time Postdoctoral Fellow in Primary Care Behavioral Health for a fellowship beginning September 2027.

This fellowship prepares the next generation of psychologists to become leaders in integrated behavioral health and primary care. Fellows develop advanced clinical, consultation, teaching, and program-development skills while working within academic healthcare settings and serving diverse and underserved patient populations.
The fellowship is grounded in the department's mission to empower patients, families, and communities by promoting equity and social justice and providing accessible, high-quality mental health care.

Fellowship Setting and Training:
Fellows are embedded within family medicine residency clinics that are certified Patient-Centered Medical Homes. These clinics serve diverse urban and underserved populations and provide care for patients with a broad range of medical and psychosocial needs.

Clinical experiences may include work with patients presenting with:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Trauma and stress-related concerns
  • Health behavior change
  • Chronic pain
  • Somatic symptoms and somatization
  • Complex medical and psychosocial needs
  • Behavioral health concerns associated with chronic disease

Fellows provide evidence-based behavioral health services as members of integrated, interprofessional care teams. Fellows work collaboratively with physicians, pharmacists, care coordinators, and other healthcare professionals to address behavioral health needs within primary care.

Medical Education and Teaching

A central component of the fellowship is preparation as a medical educator. Fellows play an important role in educating family medicine residents and supporting the development of behavioral health competencies across the residency program.

Teaching and supervision opportunities include:

  • Reviewing recorded patient encounters
  • Coaching residents in patient-centered communication and behavioral health interventions
  • Leading interdisciplinary team meetings
  • Providing didactic instruction
  • Teaching evidence-based approaches to behavioral health and behavior change
  • Supporting residents in the assessment and management of mental health concerns in primary care

Fellows receive individual, group, and peer supervision and participate in didactic and interdisciplinary learning alongside family medicine residents.
Training experiences include psychiatric management in primary care, population health, complex care management, resilience, behavioral medicine, and integrated care.
