About the Department
The Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University was founded in 1941 by Gertrude M. Cox and is one of the oldest and largest statistics programs in the country. The primary function of the Department is to achieve outstanding research, teaching, mentoring, consulting and collaborations on campus and world-wide, within a cohesive department, where all students, faculty, and staff receive fair treatment. The Department has approximately 40 faculty members, along with more than 260 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. We are the "birthplace" of SAS Institute, the world's largest privately-owned software company, and one which specializes in statistical applications. The Department maintains a close relationship with SAS and other industry partners through student programs and activities.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, invites applications for two 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor positions, each with a distinct research focus:

  • Climate and environmental statistics, including sustainability.
  • Statistics in human health and health sciences, including biostatistics and bioinformatics.


For both positions, we are particularly interested in scholars whose research advances statistical approaches to complex challenges in their respective areas and may intersect with emerging fields such as machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and sustain an independent, externally funded research program that advances statistical methodology and applications in the relevant research area.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics and related fields, and mentor doctoral students in research, dissertation development, and completion.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to address complex scientific challenges through statistical and data science approaches, while contributing to the department's academic mission and professional and university service.

Ph.D. in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, or related field by the time of employment.

  • Research expertise in statistics or a related field, with relevance to the designated application area.

  • Ability to teach statistics effectively.
