Position Highlights

The College of Medicine-Tucson at the University of Arizona invites applications for the position of Generalist Division Chief within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This is an exceptional opportunity for a visionary and transformative individual to provide strategic leadership and direction for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of the administration, clinical outreach expansion, educational, research, and quality assurance aspects of the Division within a matrixed academic healthcare environment. In addition to being a division chief, the candidate is expected to practice full-scope generalist obstetrics and gynecology across all age ranges. This includes normal and high-risk prenatal care, labor and delivery management, and inpatient and outpatient gynecologic surgical procedures. The candidate is also expected to participate in collaborative research. A focus on healthcare delivery to underserved populations, maternal health disparities, or related areas of health-services research is preferred.

The ideal candidate will be an excellent clinician, enthusiastic educator, and innovative researcher, who can build upon excellence in existing clinical, teaching, and team-based research programs. They will recognize the importance of developing an engaged and integrated faculty and staff to build and nurture strong cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams. The role will also include participation in the recruitment and retention of Division faculty.

Appointment rank is commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will meet the requirements of either a career track or tenure track associate or full professor faculty according to the College and University guidelines. If selected for a career-track appointment, the appointment will not be eligible for tenure.

Duties & Responsibilities

General Core Duties

  • Provide strategic leadership and management of day-to-day operations. Set a clear vision and execute programs providing for short- and long-term growth, value, and service for the Division with a spirit of innovation. Maintain appropriate standards of care in balance with the multiple, tripartite mission of the University.
  • Promote collaboration and consensus-building within and beyond the Division by collaborating with the Dean, Department Chair, BUMG management, staff, and other physicians with the goal to improve service and quality to meet institutional goals in research, teaching, advocacy, and scholarly activities.
  • Lead an accomplished team of faculty and mentor trainees. Drive the development of clinical programs, especially outreach maternity care programs. Create accountability in the Division.
  • Demonstrate transparency, a deep sense of professionalism, an unwavering ethical compass, and strong support for interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration and institutional growth.
  • Serve as the role model to advance the Division's participation in basic, translational and/or clinical research, clinical service, research education, and other service activities.
  • Represent the Division in the areas of financial performance, faculty career development, research, education, and clinical care, while achieving local, regional, and national visibility and prominence in the subspecialty.
  • Represent the Department in interdisciplinary conferences, conferring with other services concerning issues related to general obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Oversee the Division's faculty peer review.
  • Directly report to the Department Chair.

Clinical Core Duties

  • Strategically recruit and retain talented faculty to support clinical growth, expand the Division's research footprint, improve the national reputation of the Division at the University of Arizona and Banner Health, and ensure excellence in the education and training of medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Oversee the administration and participate in the clinical aspects of the Division, including the inpatient service and the outpatient clinics.
  • Provide direct patient care in the inpatient and outpatient settings as a licensed and fully credentialed provider as a member of the Banner University Medical Group.
  • Oversight of the members of the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology ensuring adequate weekday and call coverage and the delivery of timely, high-quality clinical care.
  • Liaise with other clinical and/or basic science departments to foster an integrated teaching environment for the College.
  • Oversee faculty peer review.

Research Core Duties

  • Develop and execute a high-impact research agenda to advance the Division's active basic, translational, and clinical research, clinical service, research education, and other service activities.
  • Foster, support, and expand research creativity and productivity within the Department, across the College, and with the College's key partners.
  • Ensure that the scope and focus of research performed within the Division is consistent with the mission and strategic direction of the College and the University.
  • Ensure that faculty minimum sponsored funding expectations are met.

Education Core Duties

  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs and other educational offices at the College to ensure the Department and Division faculty are advancing the mission of the medical student, graduate student, and graduate medical education teaching programs.
  • Provide teaching instruction for the residency and medical student educational programs by preparing and administering lectures and reviewing cases.
  • Ensure the development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate education programs in the Division.
  • Ensure the participation of Division members in the education mission, including clinical and didactic teaching as well as mentorship (career guidance and scholarly projects) with learners.
  • Representation from each Division in Department education committees and learner recruitment is expected.
  • Support continuing professional development/medical education for faculty and staff.
  • Maintain program accreditation, ensuring that the service meets or exceeds local and national standards of outcome performance.

Financial/Operational Core Duties

  • Responsibility for ensuring the fiscal accountability and sustainability of the Division.
  • Oversee the financial status of the Division, including annual budget development with Department administration, monitoring adherence to budget in all areas, including clinical and research income and expenditures.
  • Ensure effective and efficient operation of the Division.
  • Adjust expenditures and staffing as needed to address changes in resources.
  • Oversee the effective utilization of divisional space.

Knowledge. Skills. and Abilities:

  • Expert understanding of full-scope women's healthcare across the life span.
  • Demonstrated skill in complex obstetric and gynecologic surgery, including advanced laparoscopy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare administration and regulation, including hospital operations, credentialing, quality and safety, regulatory compliance, billing and coding.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the requirements of academic medicine including ACGME, UME, curriculum design, and research infrastructure.
  • Thorough knowledge of national clinical consensus statements and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated skill in strategic and financial management, including regional growth strategies, budgeting, and clinical operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior faculty in clinical care, research, and education.
  • Demonstration of excellence in communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Skill in management, mentorship, and clinical care across diverse populations with dedication to eliminating maternal health disparities in underserved communities.
  • Demonstration
    of skills in empathy, listening, resilience, and team building.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Qualified candidates must possess a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Must be Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
  • The candidate must also be eligible for a University of Arizona appointment at the rank of Associate or full Professor.
  • If the individual selected for employment does not currently hold a faculty title with the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson, they will be required to obtain faculty status. This will include obtaining letters of recommendation and review by the appropriate College review committee.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional health profession degree (e.g., PhD, MPH, MS, etc.).
  • Demonstrated leadership in teaching, clinical care, research, and/or educational enterprises in an academic department of medicine or equivalent environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient care, reflecting a service-oriented, team-based philosophy with hospital administration and health professional colleagues from all disciplines, departments, and specialties.
  • Successful track record of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees, and students.
  • A record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to grow revenues, meet budgets, measure and improve productivity and outcomes, and undertake appropriate business strategies to achieve Division, unit, Department, and/or enterprise goals in an academic medical arena.
  • Experience in the development and successful implementation of academic (educational, patient care, research) programs and services, including program review, assessment, and accreditation.
  • Demonstrated outstanding leadership in major subspecialty division/section at a (NIH funded) department of OBGVN.
  • Demonstrated excellence in scholarly activity.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising and community outreach.
