The Wastewater Management Division is seeking a motivated Instrumentation Technician I to assists with the preparation, operation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) inspection equipment throughout Fairfax County.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and operates CCTV inspection equipment, vehicles, tools, and related equipment to support daily sanitary sewer inspections.
  • Performs pre-trip, equipment, and worksite inspections and maintains vehicles, tools, safety equipment, traffic controls, and inspection equipment in safe working condition.
  • Conducts sanitary sewer inspections and accurately document findings using WinCan and other applicable computerized systems, including GIS and asset management software.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains, and assists with the repair of CCTV and related inspection equipment, including cleaning, replacing defective components, and using schematics and established procedures to identify problems.
  • Follows OSHA, VDOT, county, traffic control, and confined-space safety requirements while working in the field and communicating inspection results and applicable county requirements to citizens, contractors, inspectors, and other agencies.

Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to work mandatory overtime and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties. Overtime may be mandated when emergencies occur related to the health, welfare, or safety of either the public or employees.

Note: Will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) as emergency essential personnel staff and are required to report to work during extreme inclement weather and during emergency situations to fulfil emergency services.

Location: Works in the Closed-Circuit Television Inspection (CCTV) Section of the Asset Management Branch of the Wastewater Collection Division located at 6000 Freds Oak Road, Burke, VA 22015. In 2026, all Wastewater assignments will be permanently located at the new Water Resources and Infrastructure building, located at 6000 Freds Oak Road, Burke, VA 22015. Position may require traveling to multiple Fairfax County sites.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Instrumentation Technician I position.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to a high school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education; completion of a vocation course in electronics, one year of work experience related to the installation, maintenance and repair of industrial instrumentation or electronic/electrical equipment found in water or wastewater utilities.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) Certification within 60 days of hire.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Subject to 24-hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste or environments generating methane gas. Ability to distinguish different color wiring.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 1 year of experience working in a wastewater environment, specifically performing sewer line inspections.
  • 1 year of experience performing CCTV sewer inspection practices, techniques, and procedures using related materials and equipment.
  • 1 year of experience troubleshooting and repairing CCTV cameras, tractors, and/or electrical instrumentation and control systems.
  • 1 year of experience operating CCTV cameras to inspect and document sewer lines.
  • 1 year of experience using Microsoft Office Suite or Word and Excel to collect data.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to communicate effectively both oral and in writing. Ability to drive and operate County vehicles to various locations throughout Fairfax County to perform assigned duties. Ability to lift, carry, slide, and pull up to 90 lbs. with assistance, including manhole lids, hoses, CCTV equipment, tools, and other equipment; ability to climb onto vehicles for equipment setup and minor maintenance activities. Ability to operate automated technologies, including keyboard-driven equipment, to input, access, retrieve, and review digital information, with sufficient visual acuity to read electronic monitors, data, schematic drawings, plans, documents, and other digital information. Ability to operate hand tools and equipment requiring manual dexterity, coordination, and physical control. Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, crouch, crawl, stretch, and work in physically demanding or uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Ability to work in and around raw sewage and other wastewater-related environments. Ability to work in noisy environments and under adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow. Must be able to physically negotiate rough terrain on uneven ground such as hills, wooded and marshy areas to perform field inspections at project construction sites. Must be capable of climbing/crouching in confined areas as this position requires the ability to enter permitted confined spaces. Per safety requirements, confined spaces may not be entered by persons who weigh 310 lbs. or more. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
