Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

About the Position

As our Defender Law Clerk you will be responsible for researching legal and other issues, providing findings to attorneys, preparing legal documents and assisting attorneys at legal proceedings.

The Office of the Public Advocate protects the fundamental rights of and provides effective legal representation to all indigent persons when appointed by the Maricopa County Superior Court: Juveniles charged with criminal offenses, parents and children in dependency and severance matters, and people facing court-ordered mental health evaluation and treatment.

We Require

  • Graduation from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school

Job Contributions

  • Perform legal and other research, analysis and/or writing and provides findings to attorneys

  • Review case law, statutes, articles, and treatises

  • Draft legal memoranda or motions for defender attorneys

  • Assist defender attorneys at legal proceedings including arraignments, evidentiary hearings, and trials

  • Attend legal seminars and workshops on- and off-site

Working Conditions

  • Work occurs primarily in an indoor office or court environment working in close physical proximity with others and public contact

  • Position handles traumatic subject matter including crime scenes, accidents, etc. and is subject to interruptions, time pressure, high volumes of work, handling multiple or complicated tasks, unscheduled tasks, frequently changing tasks, accuracy, decision making, concentration, vigilance, teamwork

  • Ability to travel to and from job related locations during the course of a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding the use of County vehicles and/or private vehicles used on County business.

  • Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire

  • Ability to lift 15-25 pounds from floor to waist; 15 pounds waist to shoulder or shoulder to overhead; carry 15-25 pounds a distance of 100 feet or push/pull 100 pounds a distance of 100 feet
