Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of University Advancement supports, encourages, and promotes East Carolina's academic mission and vision by interacting with alumni, friends, and the greater community. The Division's goal is to engage and connect these constituents with the University to garner support and secure resources that will enhance East Carolina's unique place in higher education. University Advancement staff members identify major funding prospects, develop specific cultivation and solicitation strategies in support of university priorities, and implement careful stewardship of gifts. University Advancement also serves as central coordinator for all fund-raising efforts across the campus. We are seeking applicants for the position of Senior Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, which will help to enhance the University's relationships with businesses and charitable foundations.
Job Duties
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Senior Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations defines a vision for enhancing ECU's connectivity with corporate and foundation partners and leads the development and implementation of a fundraising plan that is the result of time spent on idea generation, research, and complex internal and external networking and relationship-building. The Senior Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations will work alongside executive leadership to focus attention on campus-wide goals and the Chancellor's strategic plan and align institutional priorities with corporate and foundation donor interest to inspire significant philanthropic investments.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:
The Senior Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations reports to the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Development under guidance and supervision of the Vice Chancellor of University Advancement, who reports to the Chancellor of the University.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management and Fundraising-40%
The Sr. Director also serves as the University's primary liaison with philanthropic leaders at corporations and foundations, and serves on university-wide committees, as assigned by the Vice Chancellor of University Advancement. The Sr. Director also recruits, retains, inspires, trains and motivates an experienced team of corporate and foundation relations staff, and provides ongoing training to faculty in making their case for support to corporations and foundations and to raise the level of grantsmanship at ECU. This position is responsible for resource acquisition from businesses and foundation partners to advance student success and faculty scholarship and research. The Sr. Director personally manages a dynamic portfolio of key corporate and foundation prospects and secures new levels of institutional support through gifts/grants at the six- and seven-figure level in collaboration with academic leaders.
Aligned Communication and Strategy-25%
These areas should have a detailed focus as the program strategizes to grow for the future:

  • Forge recruiting, research, and philanthropic partnerships, in alignment with ECU strategic priorities.
  • Develop a system for serving as the front door for organizations seeking University services/resources that will efficiently accommodate both reactive support as well as proactively targeting key businesses and foundations for long-term, substantive, and comprehensive relationships.
  • Develop an internal and external marketing and outreach plan, in collaboration with colleagues from University Communications.
  • Manage an assigned portfolio of approximately 150 corporate and foundation active prospects and donors and tier/share responsibility for those prospects appropriately.
  • Work towards a comprehensive University strategy with Colleges, Career Services, Student Affairs and Economic and Development Engagement.


Internal and External Partnerships-20%
Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and working closely with the Division of Research and Economic Development, the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations is responsible for deepening relationships with corporate and foundation prospects and donors in support of East Carolina University. The director's role will provide strategic, collaborative, customer-focused leadership of business and foundation engagement initiatives throughout the University.
Multi Divisional/Foundation Teamwork-15%
The Senior Director works in conjunction with philanthropic leaders at corporations and foundations to forge recruiting, research, and philanthropic partnerships in alignment with East Carolina University Strategic Priorities. The annual dollars raised by corporate and foundation entities will aid towards the UNC System Performance Metrics Goal related to increased research revenue and development sponsored program awards.
Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's degree with 5 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree and 7 years of demonstrated progressive experience in a fundraising environment with a proven ability to engage foundations, corporations and other organizations through enticing proposals that secure six figure-plus commitments within a public higher education institution.
  • Thorough understanding of and experience in annual goal setting in context of campaigns or university initiatives at the major gift level and above.
  • Demonstrative success in uniting disparate university voices from schools and colleges, to programs, centers and/or institutes into interdisciplinary ideas that elevate smaller proposals into larger and more comprehensive levels of impact and support.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment within a highly complex organizational structure.


License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Graduate degree, or extensive related professional experience.
  • Experience working with executive leadership to advance strategic priorities.
  • Highly self-motivated with strong organizational skills and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals, with a high level of accountability for dollars raised goals.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to express and recognize ideas and opportunities and communicate goals and objectives clearly.
  • Tolerance for and ability to work productively in the context of ambiguity, uncertainty and change
