Technology Engineer II

EES Coke Operations is a facility in River Rouge, MI on Zug Island. The plant produces coke from various types of coal blends and is then used as fuel in the blast furnaces at the steel mill.

This is not a position with Detroit Edison, it's a position with EES Coke Battery, which is a subsidiary of DTE Energy.

Job Summary

Location: River Rouge, MI

This role supports cokemaking processes by engaging with plant personnel in the field and in the office to support ongoing operational and maintenance activities, identify and manage projects to improve operations, support response to emergent issues, and facilitate internal and external company communications as a collaborative member of the management team.

Key Accountabilities
  • Understand the cokemaking process including receipt and conversion of raw materials, treatment and capture of byproducts, and delivery of products to respective customers
  • Understand function and engineering principles of critical equipment and unit operations
  • Develop scope and budget for plant projects coordinating work with consultants and/or outside engineering firms as appropriate
  • Oversee execution of project work and/or process changes in the field coordinating with affected EES personnel and/or contractors performing the work
  • Facilitate troubleshooting/root cause analysis efforts to address equipment failures, process issues, etc.
  • Document process changes, equipment repairs, etc. that affect plant operations and maintenance for communication at start-up and future reference
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with onsite colleagues and external entities for effective collaboration
  • Coordinate with onsite lab personnel for regular monitoring of raw materials, product quality, and process fluids as well as during troubleshooting activities
  • Conduct plant activities in a safe manner adhering to plant expectations while communicating and enforcing the same to those performing the work
  • Facilitate customer communications with product quality reporting, site visit coordination, and other related work
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited university
  • At least five years of related engineering experience preferably in a coke plant, chemical or petrochemical manufacturing facility, or other heavy industrial setting

  • Strong communication skills to convey plant interests with audiences of varied site-specific and/or technical knowledge of operations, including Standard Operating Proceduredevelopment
  • Excellent presentation skills for internal knowledge sharing and training purposes as well as external customer updates and industry conferences
  • Experience with implementing process safety management (PSM) practices
  • Experience with wastewater treatment operations
  • Experience with developing and executing purge procedures
  • Experience with implementing continuous improvement methodologies
  • Experience with data historian (e.g. AVEVA PI) and CMMS software (e.g. Maximo)
  • Ability to function within a matrix organization where employees report to both a functional leader and business leader
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with both a functional and business leader, who collaborate on employee issues and decisions (including performance management, compensation, and development)

  • Sit, stand, or walk for a minimum of 8-hour shifts, including walking long distances, up and down stairs and on uneven ground.
  • Frequently lift objects of up to 70 pounds in weight, and carry objects of up to 50 pounds in weight. Occasionally the employee will have to push or pull objects of up to 100 pounds in weight.
  • Frequently climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or occasionally, crawl.
  • Enter and work in confined space areas.
  • Talk & hear; use hands & fingers; handle & feel; and able to reach with hands and arms extensively.
  • Frequent operations of controls with occasional driving and fine hand function manipulations of tools and equipment.
  • Possess the following vision requirements: close, color, distance, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Be clean shaven (except mustaches that are above the lower lip and do not affect the respirator seal) when reporting to work

Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme heat and cold. Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or machinery and equipment with high temperatures. Occasionally exposed to vibration and fumes or airborne particles which will require the use of personal protective equipment including respirators; fire retardant clothing; self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), etc. Exposed to protected and unprotected heights, which requires the use of a personal fall protection system (harness/lifeline). The noise level in the work environment may occasionally go above the threshold, requiring PPE.
